Sunflower crochet designs

Granny Square Sunflower Bag

This design features a granny-style sunflower pattern on a white background. The bag is constructed by crocheting individual sunflower squares and then sewing them together to form the bag. The squares are created using a combination of puff stitches and bobble stitches to form the petals, with a brown centre. The squares are then sewn together and a simple border and handle are added. This design is perfect for those who want a cheerful and unique bag.

Crossbody Sunflower Bag

This design is perfect for those who want a smaller bag to carry just the essentials. It features a similar sunflower square design as the previous bag but is constructed differently. Two sunflower squares are crocheted and then sewn together to form the front and back of the bag. A dark blue border is added around the top edge of the bag, and D-rings are crocheted into the work to attach the strap. The strap is then crocheted separately and attached to the D-rings. This bag is a great choice for a fun and fast crochet project.

Everyday Sunflower Bag

This bag is constructed in four parts: the front and back panels, the side/bottom panel, and the strap. The panels are slip-stitched together to create the "bucket" of the bag. The strap is tubular and comfortable on the shoulder. This design offers a new technique for those who want to explore crocheting bags in a different way.

Sunflower Drawstring Backpack

This design includes a fabric lining, which can be sewn by hand or with a sewing machine. The backpack is constructed by crocheting sunflower motifs and then assembling them to form the bag. This design is perfect for those who want a functional and stylish bag.

Boho Sunflower Bag

This design features a blend of colours and stitches, creating a charming and versatile bag. The pattern is well-suited for those who want to gift a handmade bag to their loved ones. The granny square construction and boho style make it a unique and addictive crochet project.

Yarn types for sunflower crochet

When it comes to yarn types for sunflower crochet, there are a few options to consider. The type of yarn you choose will depend on the specific project you are working on, as well as your personal preferences. Here is a detailed guide to help you select the most suitable yarn for your sunflower crochet project:

Yarn Weight

The weight of the yarn will determine the size and texture of your crochet sunflower. Typically, a medium-weight (worsted) yarn is recommended for sunflower patterns. This weight provides a nice balance between thickness and flexibility, allowing you to create petals with a smooth finish. However, you can also experiment with different yarn weights to achieve varying sizes. For instance, if you want a smaller sunflower, you can opt for a lighter weight yarn like DK or sport weight. On the other hand, if you desire a larger and bulkier sunflower, you can choose a bulky or chunky yarn.

Yarn Fibre

The choice of fibre will impact the look and feel of your crochet sunflower. Here are some common yarn fibres to consider:

  • Cotton Yarn: Cotton yarn is a popular choice for sunflower crochet. It produces a smooth and frizz-free surface, giving your sunflower a neat and polished appearance. Cotton yarn can be a bit tricky to work with due to its lack of elasticity, but it yields beautiful results.
  • Acrylic Yarn: If you're looking for a washable option, acrylic yarn is a great choice. It is easy to care for and comes in a wide range of colours. Acrylic yarn is also affordable and widely available.
  • Wool Yarn: Wool yarn is another option for sunflower crochet, especially if you want a natural fibre. Wool has a soft and fluffy texture, giving your sunflower a cosy and dimensional look.

Yarn Colour

Sunflowers are typically characterised by their vibrant colours. When selecting yarn for your crochet sunflower, consider using shades of yellow, brown, and green. You can also get creative and experiment with different colour combinations to make unique sunflowers. For example, you can try using autumnal tones for the petals or mix and match colours to create a non-traditional look.

Additional Considerations

  • Pattern Recommendations: Always refer to the specific pattern you are following. The pattern will often suggest the type and weight of yarn that will yield the best results.
  • Hook Size: Remember to select a crochet hook that is suitable for the chosen yarn. The pattern will usually specify the recommended hook size, ensuring your stitches are consistent and your project turns out as intended.
  • Stitch Definition: Consider the type of stitches required for your sunflower pattern. Certain yarns may showcase stitch definition better than others, so choose a yarn that will highlight the texture and details of your sunflower.

Sunflower bag patterns

Sunflower bags are a fun and bright way to add some cheer to your wardrobe. There are many different ways to crochet a sunflower bag, from granny square motifs to drawstring backpacks and boho-style slouch bags. Here is a detailed guide on how to crochet a sunflower bag, with a focus on the "bag o' day crochet sunflower" pattern.

Materials

To make a sunflower bag, you will need the following materials:

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn in various colours, such as yellow, brown, green, white/ivory, and blue.
  • A US G6/4mm crochet hook.
  • Tapestry needle and scissors.
  • (Optional) D-rings for a crossbody bag.

The Sunflower Square

The sunflower square is the main component of the bag and is created by crocheting a sunflower-shaped design, starting from the centre and working outwards to form the petals. Here are the steps to create the sunflower square:

  • Using a brown or dark centre colour and a G hook, chain 5 and join with a slip stitch to form a loop. Chain 3 more (this counts as the first double crochet), and make 15 double crochet stitches into the loop. Slip stitch to the top of the first stitch and fasten off.
  • The second row is made of puff stitches. Attach the antique gold or yellow colour and chain 2. Yarn over and insert the hook into the same stitch, pulling up a loop to the height of a double crochet. Repeat this process 6 more times until you have 7 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops, then chain 1 to lock in the stitch. Make puff stitches in all the stitches in the previous row. At the end of the round, slip stitch to the top of the first puff stitch and fasten off.
  • The third row is worked in bobbles. Attach the yellow colour and start the row by chaining 3 or with a standing stitch. Work bobbles into the spaces in the previous row by yarn over, inserting the hook into the space, pulling up a loop, and repeating this process 3 more times. You should now have 5 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops, then chain 2 to lock in the bobble. Continue making bobbles across the row and slip stitch to the top of the first bobble stitch. Fasten off.
  • The fourth row turns the circle into a square. Join a green or blue colour in any space in the previous round. Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet). Make 2 double crochet stitches in the same space. In the next space, work 3 triple crochet stitches, chain 1, then 3 more triple crochet stitches. This forms a corner. Repeat this pattern of 3 double crochet stitches, 3 half double crochet stitches, and 3 double crochet stitches in each space, forming 3 more corners. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first double crochet stitch and fasten off, weaving in the ends.

Assembling the Bag

To assemble the bag, you will need to create multiple sunflower squares and sew them together. For the "bag o' day crochet sunflower" pattern, you will need to make 13 squares. Once you have the desired number of squares, lay them out in the desired configuration. Using a tapestry needle and yarn, whip stitch the squares together, leaving the upper half of two squares on either side of the bag unattached to form the opening.

Border and Handles

The border and handles of the bag can be customised to your preference. Here are some general instructions for creating the border and handles:

  • Attach the main colour yarn (usually white or ivory) a few stitches before a side "valley" (the lower joining point of two squares).
  • Single crochet around the top edge of the bag, working 2 single crochets into the top of each "peak" (the corner stitches of the squares). In the valleys, single crochet to the last stitch of the square, then continue working single crochet on the next square.
  • To create the handles, chain 70 stitches and skip the next valley. Join to the opposite peak, being careful not to twist the chain. Continue single crocheting around the row.
  • Work a few more rows of single crochet around the outside edges of the handles and the sides of the bag.
  • You can adjust the length of the handles by adding or removing chains.

Variations and Customisations

The sunflower bag pattern can be customised in various ways to suit your style and preferences. Here are some ideas for variations:

  • Change the colours of the sunflowers to create unique designs.
  • Use thicker or thinner yarn to make a larger or smaller bag.
  • Tweak the purse strap by using a pre-made adjustable strap or making a shorter strap.
  • Line the bag with fabric and add a magnetic closure for added security.

The Everyday Sunflower Bag crochet pattern

This is the first bag I haven't worked up in the round, and I had so much fun exploring a new technique. The bag is constructed in four parts: the front and back panels, the side/bottom panel, and the strap. After they have been worked up, they are slip-stitched together to create the "bucket" of the bag.

I also chose to do something a little different with the strap. I did a poll on Instagram to see what the preferences were when it came to the length of the strap. I also wanted to know if one strap is preferred over two. The response was that most people prefer a kind of crossbody long strap style. To keep the bag functional, I wanted a strap that would be able to hold weight, so I decided to go with a more tubular strap rather than a flat strap.

I am actually super obsessed with the look of the tubular strap, but it also makes the strap super comfortable on my shoulder. With these new design elements, I hope this bag is just as functional for you as it is stylish. Feel free to play around with different colors and fibers.

This bag is constructed in 4 separate pieces: the front and back panels, the side/bottom panel, and the strap. The bag is worked in rows. The 1st stitch of each row should be placed into the same stitch as the turning chain. The turning chain does not count as the 1st stitch of the row. The pattern is written as: # of single crochet stitches (color abbreviation), e.g. 8 (E) means 8 sc in Ecru. The odd rows are the right-side rows. Even rows will be the wrong side.

The finished bag measures 11 inches wide by 11 inches long, with a 39-inch strap. The gauge is 18 sts x 22 rows worked in single crochet.

I have created a chart for the front panel of the bag for those who prefer to follow a chart rather than a written pattern. The PDF version of this chart is included with the pattern purchase in my Etsy Shop. Here is the free online version for you to use.

Constructing the bag

Before attaching the front and back panels to the side/bottom panel, make sure the wrong sides of the front and back panels are facing each other (inwards) and the right sides of the panels are facing away from each other (outwards).

Begin with the corner of the side/bottom panel with the yarn still attached. Starting with the top left corner of the front panel, begin slip-stitching the panels together, working around the left, bottom, and right side of the panel. Be sure to place three slip stitches on both corners to make the turns.

Repeat the steps for the back panel, attaching your yarn to the top left corner and working your way around. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Constructing and Attaching the Strap

To create the strap, count down 10 stitches from either end of the strap panel and tie on your yarn, leaving at least a 4-foot tail.

Using a yarn needle, begin weaving your tail through the stitches on either side of the strap panel to create a tube. Continue down the panel, fastening off 10 stitches from the end. Weave in your tails.

To attach the strap to the bag, tie on your yarn to the 10th stitch on one side of the strap with the open side facing up and sew on the strap with a yarn needle. Repeat on the other side of the strap, making sure not to twist the strap.

To give the bag a more functional and completed look, line the bag with your favourite fabric.
